An Altar on the Keyboard: The “Crazy Love” Behind Watchman Nee’s 1052 Hymns and the Zhou Kangyao Couple
[Introduction] In the long history of Chinese Christian hymns, there is a dark blue hymnal titled Hymns (the Shanghai edition containing 1052 hymns). Its beautiful melodies and rigorous harmonies have nourished countless seeking hearts. People often remember Brother Watchman Nee’s commission as the “seer of the divine revelation in the present age,” but few notice that he dedicated two significant “two-year” periods in his life to editing hymns. The first was from 1927 to 1928 for the Little Flock Hymnal; the second was from 1950 to 1951, when he completed this 1052 Hymns at the Gospel Book Room on Tongren Road in Shanghai.

During this second “two-year period of focus,” Brother Nee had an indispensable “main force” in music by his side—Brother Zhou Kangyao (Kang-Yao Chou). Even less known is that behind Zhou Kangyao stood a co-worker who was “in no way inferior” in spiritual measure: his wife, Dr. Li Bixia (Pi-Hsia Lee). They were a couple “burning” with the love of Christ, appearing as crazy lovers of the Lord. They spent their entire lives defining what it means to be absolutely consecrated, “forsaking everything and moving from one place to another.”

I. Forsaking: From the “PUMC Golden Key” to the Frontier with “Nine Dimes”
Zhou Kangyao was born in South America. At the age of nine, he won the gold medal in a piano competition at the Royal Academy of Music in the UK and received praise from King George V. When he returned to China with his outstanding artistic achievements, a high-ranking position at the Shanghai Customs and a teaching post at Tsinghua University awaited him.
His wife, Li Bixia, was a straight-A student for eight consecutive years at Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). She won the “Golden Key Award” and became an attending physician who stayed on to teach at the college. She once treated John D. Rockefeller’s nephew and politely declined a fully-funded opportunity for further studies in the United States.

After getting married in 1937, this “golden couple” in the eyes of the world made a shocking decision: they sold everything to go and preach the gospel. (Note: On September 22, 1937, they took a boat from Qingdao to Hong Kong, and on October 23, they traveled from Hong Kong to Yunnan).
A “Crazy” Choice: Li Bixia resigned from her teaching post at PUMC and followed her husband deep into the frontier province of Yunnan, a move considered “crazy” by their relatives and friends.
Faith of Nine Dimes: When they first arrived in Kunming, they had only nine dimes left. On the desolate border, Brother Zhou climbed mountains to preach the gospel, while Dr. Li healed the sick and saved lives.
Praise on the Cliff: When their three-year-old eldest son, Mengyue, died prematurely from cholera, Zhou Kangyao chose to submit to God in his grief. Not long after, in a thrilling moment when his Jeep’s brakes failed and one wheel was hanging over a cliff, he was able to sing loudly: “Sing the song of faith again! No matter how dark the night; If you praise, God will work, to give you what you believe!”

II. Consecration: The Kuling Training and the Relinquishment of the “Crazy Lovers”
In 1948, when their relatives and friends were preparing to take them abroad to seek refuge, for the sake of the gospel, the Zhou couple resolutely chose to head north. In June 1948, Zhou Kangyao attended the co-worker training held by Brother Watchman Nee in Kuling, Fuzhou.
Total Pouring Out: Dr. Li Bixia offered up her entire private clinic in Meixian and opened a clinic in Kuling to serve the villagers.
Absolute Following: Zhou Kangyao told his relatives and friends, “We rely on the Lord; do not send money.” Moving from one place to another, they sought no earthly security, only desiring to be the Lord’s “crazy lovers,” placing all their professional talents and life assets entirely upon the altar.

III. Co-working: The Marital Harmony Behind the 1052 Hymns
In the early 1950s, Zhou Kangyao served as the music editor at the Shanghai Gospel Book Room, becoming Watchman Nee’s “main force” in the hymnal work.
The Main Force Behind the Scenes: In a sweltering attic room on Tongren Road in Shanghai, Zhou Kangyao sweated profusely as he arranged easy-to-play, pleasant, and rigorous chords for a thousand hymns. This was not merely the organization of music theory, but the pouring out of his very life.
Sparks of Inspiration: Brothers Nee and Zhou collaborated seamlessly. When Brother Nee was enduring trials and felt physically and mentally exhausted, Zhou Kangyao would play famous classical pieces on the piano to soothe his soul. He even assisted Brother Nee in composing the moving melody for the hymn “Hast Thou No Scar?”.
A “No Less Inferior” Co-laborer: Dr. Li Bixia was working at the Shanghai Maternal and Child Health Hospital at the time. She not only supported the family financially but was also completely one with her husband spiritually. During the special turbulent years that followed, when Dr. Li was publicly denounced for her faith, Zhou Kangyao insisted on telling his daughter: “When I go to the hospital, I call her ‘Dr. Li Bixia’. I will not change!” This watchfulness through the fiery trials testified to their shared service.
IV. The End: Returning in Glory to the “Heavenly Home” Amidst Praise
Throughout his life, Brother Zhou Kangyao gave up salaried positions, fame, and family wealth three times, just to follow the Lord’s footsteps. In 1982, he composed poems and music on his sickbed and rested in the Lord while preaching, his deathbed blooming with fresh flowers.
Dr. Li Bixia, on the other hand, held fast to a life of “preaching the gospel in season and out of season.” She was invited three times to attend the National Prayer Breakfast in the United States, bearing a direct testimony in front of President Ronald Reagan. In 2005, she rested in the Lord’s bosom amidst the sound of singing hymns.

[Conclusion] Brother Watchman Nee poured tremendous effort into editing the 1052 Hymns, and the Zhou couple were his most faithful counterparts during that period of history. Today, when we sing those beautiful chords, please remember that behind those keyboard keys, there was such a couple who forsook everything to be the Lord’s craziest lovers.
