ZECHARIAH 14:4 “And His feet will stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split at its middle toward the east and toward the west into a very great valley, so that half of the mountain will remove to the north and half of it to the south.”

ACTS 1:12 “Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.”

The Mount of Olives is one of three peaks of a mountain ridge which runs for 3.5 kilometres just east of the Old City across the Kidron Valley. The peak to its north is Mount Scopus, at 826 metres, while the peak to its south is the Mount of Corruption, at 747 m. The highest point on the Mount of Olives is At-Tur, at 818 m. The ridge acts as a watershed, and its eastern side is the beginning of the Judean Desert.

Mount Olives has been a major site of pilgrimage for Christians. Several key events in the life of Jesus took place on the Mount of Olives. In Acts it is described as the place from which Jesus ascended to heaven. This means that He will also come back to the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:11-12).
