Trapped in Earthquake, Brother Risks Life to Save Another: Hualien Church Member Li Lai-an Experiences Christ as Peace Amidst Life and Death
Special Report by Reporter Yang Yu-mei On April 3rd, a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien, leaving brother Li Lai-an, a responsible shepherd and caregiver for the saints in the Hualien church, trapped within the red-tagged, severely damaged Marshal Hotel building. Fellow believers of the Hualien church swiftly spread the news and urgently prayed for his safety. Meanwhile, brother Lin Jun-jue, residing next door on the second floor, bravely disregarded his own safety to rescue Li Lai-an. Ultimately, all the saints within the building were safely evacuated.
During the Sunday service on April 8th, Li Lai-an shared, “I truly experienced Christ as my peace offering and the love among brothers.”
Brother’s Unwavering Love and Rescue
“I was alone at home at the time, as my wife was in Nantou. The earthquake struck suddenly and violently. Our home, located on the second floor, was entirely glass-walled with minimal interior partitions. The shaking was intense. I felt the house being torn apart, with the sound of shattering glass, splintering wood, furniture toppling over, power outage, and dust filling the air. It was impossible to stand,” he recounted. “My first thought was that the building would collapse, and I was ready to meet the Lord. There was no fear, only a profound sense of peace. I told the Lord, ‘Lord, I am merely coming to see you.’ My only regret was not being able to say goodbye to my wife.”
After the initial tremors subsided, Li Lai-an heard his neighbor, Lin Jun-jue, calling from outside the door. “I shouted back, intending to open the door, but it was jammed shut. He started kicking the door, but it wouldn’t budge because there were two locked doors to my apartment.” Then, the second wave of tremors hit. “The kicking didn’t stop. Brother Lin Jun-jue persisted, kicking and kicking…” Li Lai-an described.
Every second was crucial in this life-or-death situation, with the building’s potential collapse looming. Despite the danger, Lin Jun-jue not only stayed but also relentlessly tried to break down the door to save Li Lai-an. To open the first locked door, Lin Jun-jue ran back to his own apartment, amidst the disarray, and grabbed a thick wooden post to ram against the lock.
“He could have easily escaped first and then notified the rescue team to save me,” Li Lai-an said, his voice filled with emotion. “But instead, he stayed and found a wooden post to break down the door. During the continuous aftershocks, brother Lin called for help, but at that time, only exit was allowed, so the brothers outside couldn’t come in.” After half an hour, without any additional support, both doors were finally opened by Lin Jun-jue. They emerged into the second-floor common area just as rescue personnel arrived and guided them to safety.
Having grown up in Hualien, Lin Jun-jue was accustomed to earthquakes. However, this was his first experience of needing to escape during one. Witnessing the furniture violently shaking and the walls cracking, the Holy Spirit prompted him to evacuate. As he opened the door, he saw electrical wires sparking. The door was jammed and required immense force to open a small gap. He finally managed to escape but noticed that Li Lai-an’s door was shut. “My first reaction was, ‘Did he go out? Is he still inside?'” he recalled.
The burly Lin Jun-jue used all his strength to kick Li Lai-an’s door, but only a small corner of the inner door budged. He continued kicking while simultaneously calling for help. He kicked for what felt like an eternity until he heard Li Lai-an’s voice from inside: “The door is almost open!” Lin Jun-jue intensified his efforts, refusing to give up until the very last second, unaware that he had been kicking for half an hour.
When asked if he would repeat his actions in a similar situation, Lin Jun-jue answered without hesitation, “Yes!” Li Lai-an, on the other hand, confessed, “During my prayer the next day, I repented to the Lord, admitting my selfishness in prioritizing my own safety over my brother’s. If I had another chance, I would ask Lin Jun-jue to escape first and then notify the rescue team to come for me.” After the rain of grace, a heart filled with sorrow and repentance is the offering that God desires. (Psalm 51:17)
Sharing the Gospel Amidst the Aftermath
Despite the destruction of his home and the ongoing aftershocks, Li Lai-an experienced an inner peace. He recalled the words of the Lord: “These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ” (Colossians 2:17). “Apart from Christ, there is no truth or eternity on earth,” he said. “I thank the Lord for sparing my life, allowing me the opportunity to mature in life and continue serving the saints.” This echoes Philippians 1:25: “Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith.”
