I. The Lord’s Recovery in Taiwan
Brother Witness Lee was sent to Taiwan by Brother Watchman Nee in May 1949, and he began the work on August 1 in Taipei. By widely spreading the gospel, caring for and shepherding the saints, holding conferences, organizing trainings, and publishing the written ministry, over the next few years the number of local churches and saints grew greatly in the whole island of Taiwan.
In 1962 Brother Lee was led by the Lord to go to the United States to work. He formally brought the work of the Lord’s recovery to the English-speaking world. During his ministry in the United States, he still frequently came back to Taiwan and visited different places in Southeast Asia to supply and guide the local churches, causing the local churches in the Far East to continually progress in life, truth, and service. In particular, in July 1968 Brother Lee personally led a group of 140 young saints from the United States and Canada to visit all the local churches in Taiwan within thirty days. On the one hand, this allowed the saints in North America to see the testimony of the church life, and on the other hand, it greatly encouraged the saints on the island of Taiwan. At the same time, it also initiated the fellowship between the local churches in Taiwan and those in North America.
In the fall of 1984 Brother Lee came back to Taiwan from the United States, leading the local churches to practice the way of meeting and service according to the revelation of the Scriptures and God’s ordination. In 1986 he started the full-time training on the Truth of the Bible and the Service of the Church in Taipei, perfecting young people who had a heart to serve the Lord and preparing useful vessels for the Lord’s recovery. From January 1989 onward, he sent the trained young people to different places on the island of Taiwan to spread the gospel, and within five years sixty-eight churches were raised up in different locations. From 1993 onward, whether it was the spread of the Lord’s recovery in the Russian-speaking world, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, or other overseas locations, the local churches in Taiwan were actively involved and took part in the distribution.
Over the years, through the supply and help of this ministry, the local churches in Taiwan have endeavored to enter into the truth of the Lord’s recovery, closely following the speaking of the age, perfecting the saints to live the life of God and man, practicing and carrying out the way ordained by God, emphasizing everyone’s functioning, encouraging fellowship, bringing in the building up, and constantly strengthening the gospel work on the island of Taiwan. They have also strived to cooperate with the spread overseas. As a result, the number of local churches and the number of saints in Taiwan have continually increased. By the end of 2023, there were a total of 148 local churches and over 150,000 people, including children, participating in the church life, with a registered number of saints exceeding 350,000.
May the Lord continue to gain and use the local churches in Taiwan, not only that they may be a strong testimony of the Lord locally, but also that they may have a part in the ultimate move of the Lord’s recovery throughout the earth. Glory to the Lord!
II. A Brief Introduction to the Church Life
1. Endeavoring to Enter into the Truth and Following the Speaking of the Age
The local churches in Taiwan lead the saints to enter into the Holy Bible Recovery Version of both the Old and New Testaments and the Life-study, so that the saints may have a complete and solid understanding of the Lord’s Word. By encouraging the saints to use the Morning Revival, the local churches help them practice living the life of God and man, which is morning by morning revival and day by day prevailing. In various kinds of meetings, the saints are also led to pursue the truth. Whether entering into Brother Nee’s collected works, Brother Lee’s collected works, ministry digests, other important books and magazines, and so on, the local churches are able to continually supply and nourish the saints in the church life with a healthy word. Recently the brothers sounded a trumpet to all the saints in Taiwan, and they began to enter into the Life-study in a common-pursuit way to read the Bible. This helps the saints establish the habit of regularly pursuing the Lord’s Word so that they can be filled with the Lord’s Word day by day until the Lord comes.
The brothers have encouraged the saints to spare no effort and pay the price to attend the annual seven conferences and trainings on the scene. Through the video trainings, Prayer-Reading-Speaking Conferences, and Morning Revival pursuits held by the brothers in various locations, the saints on the island of Taiwan have increasingly burdened themselves to enter into the messages of the seven conferences and trainings each year, to keep up with the up-to-date speaking of the Lord, and to walk the way constituted by the truth.
2. Living the Life of God and Man, Walking the Way Ordained by God, and Fellowshipping to Bring In the Building Up
In order to help the saints grow in their spiritual life, the local churches in Taiwan lead the saints in an all-inclusive way to live the life of God and man by practicing to exercise the spirit, to call on the Lord’s name, to pray-read the Lord’s Word, to be in the morning revival, to have the evening prayer, to read the Scriptures, and to pray individually. This is so that they may establish a personal, deep, private, and spiritual relationship with the Lord. For college youth, they are encouraged to move into the homes of brothers and sisters and practice living a common life, laying a solid foundation for a regular spiritual life. For the saints who are married, they are encouraged to practice living the life of God and man with their whole family, and to set their homes apart and open them up for the church life. For saints of different age groups (children, teens, college students, young professionals, and middle-aged and elderly people), suitable meetings, perfectings, or trainings are provided so that they may grow in their divine life and attain the building up of the living Body of Christ. In light of the current low birth rate and aging trend on the island of Taiwan, the brothers in the local churches are vigilant and have paid close attention to the gospel work among the young people. They have been strengthening it, using the strength of the whole church to gain, edify, and equip the young people, preparing useful vessels for the testimony of the Lord’s recovery in the next generation on the island of Taiwan.
To build up the Body of Christ, the local churches in Taiwan wholeheartedly lead the saints to walk the way ordained by God, seeking to restore the church life where everyone functions and all serve. The saints are perfected to learn to be faithful and wise stewards of the Lord. Under the framework of the blessing, home, group, and district, they practice begetting, nourishing, teaching, and building. They practice going out every week to contact people and spread the gospel, opening their homes to practice shepherding, gathering in the group meeting to teach one another, and ministering Christ in the prophesying on the Lord’s Day.
In order to promote greater fellowship among the responsible brothers, the general saints, and the local churches in Taiwan, the local churches have various kinds of fellowship gatherings throughout the year. The brothers’ ministry fellowship gathering and sisters’ ministry fellowship gathering each year lead the saints to enter into the spring and fall international conferences and the training messages for elders and responsible brothers. In addition to this, there are also the National Day and Thanksgiving Conference messages, traffic, prayer, and Reading-Speaking pursuit held in Central Taiwan Fellowship Center, and trainings during the summer and winter seasons in various locations. This gives the local churches and the general saints many opportunities to be in the Lord’s Word, to be blended together as one, and to bring in the state of being of one mind and one accord.
3. Perfecting Young Saints to Attend the Full-time Training
Brother Lee started the full-time training on the Truth of the Bible and the Service of the Church in Taipei in 1986. After Brother Lee returned to the United States, he entrusted the training to the brothers in Taiwan Gospel Work to continue serving. In 1989 the first term of the full-time training of Taiwan Gospel Work officially began. The full-time training is not a school, nor is it a theological seminary or Bible college intended to produce professional preachers. The training is intended to help young believers who pursue the Lord to grow up in Christ, allowing them to become normal, living, functioning members on the Body of Christ, and enabling them to be built up in the living Body of Christ and to directly build up the living Body of Christ as those who are gifted.
Each term of the training is under the direct guidance of this ministry and closely follows the fellowship of the Body of Christ, the universe. After thirty-five years, there have been more than six thousand young saints, with the exact number to be provided by the Training Center, trained. The young saints who have been perfected have not only been going out to gain people and territory for the Lord in the gospel spread in Taiwan and overseas, but also have been functioning as living members in the new way in the local churches.
4. Strengthening the Gospel Work on the Island of Taiwan and Actively Cooperating with the Spread Overseas
Over ten years ago, the brothers in the local churches in Taiwan burdened themselves to actively expand the gospel work, hoping to lead ten thousand new people to the Lord every year. From early 2009 to now, they have led nearly 127,500 people to the Lord, over 79,000 of whom are youth under the age of thirty-five. In early 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic began to affect the church life, but the co-workers were still burdened. They called on the saints in various locations to move and spread the gospel in the over one hundred townships on the island of Taiwan that did not yet have churches. After three years, they had established lampstands in twenty-four townships. Now that the pandemic has passed and the regular church life has fully resumed, looking ahead to the next two years, at least six more townships will have the Lord’s testimony established.
In terms of the spread overseas, starting in 1993, the brothers on the island of Taiwan have sent out nearly two hundred co-workers to the Russian-speaking world to spread the gospel, and they have also been involved in gospel campaigns in Europe and Africa. From 2010 onward, the co-workers began to participate with the churches in Asia to have a part in the Lord’s move in Asia (LMA). Up to now, they have participated in establishing over three hundred churches in twenty-one countries in Asia. In 2017, all the local churches in Taiwan had saints who participated in the gospel campaign in Germany, leading many refugees fleeing the war in the Middle East to turn to the Lord, and at the same time bringing the high-quality gospel of the Lord’s recovery to the young people in Germany. In 2021, even though the pandemic was causing disruptions, the brothers still transmitted the need of the spread overseas. Up to now, forty couples of young co-workers have answered the call, bringing their families to nine countries, including Asia, Africa, and Europe, where they have cooperated with the local servants to spread the gospel and establish the Lord’s testimonies. In the past thirty-five years, the co-workers from the island of Taiwan have had a part in the spread overseas and have been to a total of fifty locations or regions, including twelve countries in the former Soviet Union, ten countries in Europe, six countries in Africa, five countries in the Americas, and seventeen countries or regions in Asia.
We practice to “pray-go, money-go, move-go” to meet the need of the Lord’s spread throughout the earth. Through the sweet fellowship in the Body of Christ, and functioning in the new man, the local churches in Taiwan will continue to cooperate with the local churches throughout the earth to spread the Lord’s testimony, build up the Body of Christ, and prepare the Bride of Christ to welcome the Lord’s coming!
