Romans 7:1-6

“A Funeral and a Wedding”

Paul’s progression

Romans 5 – The __________ in Christ surpassing the ____________ in Adam

5:12 “Therefore just as through one man sin entered into the world, and through sin, death; and thus death passed on to all men because all have sinned.”

5:14 “But death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned after the likeness of Adam’s transgression, who is a type of Him who was to come.”

5:17 “For if, by the offense of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign through the One, Jesus Christ.”

Romans 6 – Our __________ with Christ in ________

6:6 “Knowing this, that our old man has been crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be annulled, that we should no longer serve sin as slaves;

7 For he who has died is justified from sin.

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.”

6:14 “For sin will not lord it over you, for you are not under the law but under grace.”

Romans 7 – Two Husbands

Man’s original position to God was that of a ____________. (______________)

Isaiah 54:5 “For you maker is your Husband; Jehovah of hosts is His name…”

God did not give the law to fallen man to ________ but to ________

Romans 3:20 “…through the law is the clear knowledge of sin.”

Romans 4:15 “…but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.”

Romans 5:20 “And the law entered in alongside that the offense might abound..”

Romans 7:7 “…But I did not know sin except through the law…”

The Funeral of the _____________

Romans 7:1 “Or are you ignorant, brothers (for I speak to those who know the law, that the law lords it over the man as long as he lives?

2 For the married woman is bound by the law to her husband while he is living; but if the husband dies, she is discharged from the law regarding the husband.

3 So then if, while the husband is living, she is joined to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if the husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, though she is joined to another man.”

Romans 7:4 “So then my brothers, you have been made dead to the law through the body of Christ so that you might be joined to another, to Him who has been raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit to God.”

Romans 6:6 “Knowing this, that our old man has been crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be annulled, that we should no longer serve sin as slaves”

Galatians 2:19 “For I through law have died to law that I might live to God.”

20 “I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith…”

The Wedding of the Wife and __________

2 Corinthians 11:2 “…for I betrothed you to one husband to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.”

Discussion Questions:

Why did God give man the law?

Who is the “you” who was made dead in Romans 7:4?

Did God annul the law? Abolish it? Remove it? Then how can we say we are no longer under it?

Why are cocoa pebbles the objectively best cereal?
