Dear saints in the Lord’s Recovery,
We are pleased to announce that the Church in Washington, DC (CIDC) is moving ahead to purchase a meeting hall in Washington, DC, the capital of the United States. We believe this is a further step in advancing the Lord’s move in the country that the Lord has raised up for His Recovery. It would also mark the first permanent meeting facility here in the nation’s capital, almost 50 years since CIDC was first established in 1973. In the mid-1980s, the saints migrated to nearby suburbs and established churches in Virginia and Maryland, so CIDC was suspended. The lampstand in the nation’s capital resumed in 2012 as it was designated as a GTCA city, with strong support of the surrounding churches and reinforced by migration back into the city.
As the center of the federal government and international diplomacy, DC is also home to many university campuses (including Georgetown, George Washington, and American University), where CIDC currently has presence for the campus work. A new type of “campus” is also emerging among large corporations (including Amazon’s HQ2), a development expected to facilitate further migration for the church life. The church life today has grown to approximately 80 adult saints, about 30 children, a number of home meetings in various locations around the city, and an active campus labor. The saints have prayed continuously over many years and accumulated funds faithfully for a permanent facility that would meet not just local needs, but also the needs of the Mid-Atlantic region and the entire Recovery.
After a multi-year search and in much fellowship among the churches, the Lord has led us each step of the way to sign a purchase agreement for 4380 MacArthur Boulevard NW, Washington, DC, for $3.5M. The property was initially offered in 2019 for $4.5M with an encumbrance involving an additional, costly build-out for future tenants. The Lord recently opened the door and put the building back on the market free of any tenants, greatly simplifying the transaction and facilitating price negotiation. We praise the Lord for His timing and leading! We signed the purchase agreement on May 26, 2020, and our anticipated closing date is August 26, 2020, reflecting a 60-day study period followed by 30 days to close. Please see https://churchindc.org/meeting-hall for additional details on the property and the CIDC history.
We would like to open this matter to the Body, first and foremost to pray for the Lord’s move and interests in DC and in the United States. We also want to provide the opportunity for the saints to participate financially in the fellowship towards this purchase. Renovations will likely require an additional $400K beyond the purchase price, bringing the total cost to about $3.9M. We currently have $1.6M in our building fund, expect a further $400K in contributions and bridge loans from local saints, and are actively discussing with several banks to cover the remaining $1.9M in total cost. We recognize how difficult and uncertain the current economic conditions may be for many churches and saints. If you are burdened to contribute, please follow the instructions below. We appreciate contributions by July 31, but remain open after that date as
your situation allows. Praise the Lord for His testimony and His move!
