“And from there they journeyed to Beer; …Then Israel sang this song: Spring up, O well! Sing to it! The well, which the leaders sank, which the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter, with their staffs.” (Numbers 21:16-18)

Beer (בְּאֵר in Hebrew) means a well. In the Bible, it usually appears in compound names of places, such as Beer-elim, Beer-sheba and Beeroth. The exact location of Beer is not certain. Because the well was dug by the leaders and nobles of the people with their scepter and staffs, some scholars believe that Beer may be located about 56 kilometers east of the Dead Sea, in the north of the Arnon Valley, where water could be easily found by digging the soil.

Spiritually, the well at Beer typifies Christ within us. The digging of the well signifies the digging away of the “dirt”, the barriers in our heart – our mind, emotion, will, and conscience – so that the Spirit as the living water may spring up within us and flow freely.
