University of Washington, Pullman – Where Summer Internship Gets Started

Out of a small campus town with about 30,000 in its population the Lord’s
move is beyond our expectation. Here the campus work is really a conformation
for the ministry on five rings blending together to gain new ones – students,
full-timer, open homes, elders and faculty. A kind of spirit of innovation can be
touched even from first time visitors.
Four years ago, summer internship got started from here. The reason is so
simple, all the church kids graduated no other choice. Only through recruiting
non-church kids to coordinate during the summer time. That is why the summer
internship got started. This year 2014 according to Tim S. fellowship, 160 campus
student participated in summer internship in 20 campuses in U.S.
This year in Pullman they have 8 students in summer internship, 2 are
church kids, 6 are non-church kids. They have 80 good freshman contacts in their
hands already, mostly Caucasian students.
It is a student-run service. The full timers perfect the students to manage
one brothers house, one sisters house, many home meetings on the campus
and the Friday night meeting. This kind of experience of, perfecting somewhat
like a daughter start to learn how to drive, sometimes the driving is terrible but
eventually they make it. Why is it student run? A very simple reason, they are
short of full-timers on campus. Third, weekly appointments are shifted from one-on-one basis to small groups of 4-5 members for better connection.
Their leading brothers share with us their experiences in campus outreach.
First, shepherd their souls then enliven their spirit. We need to be very Jesusly
human. We cannot expect a quick result. For some new ones, the first year of
contact, even are quite painful. Second, bite-sized, taylor-made content need
to fit for new ones capacity, which are quite different from church kids. Church
kids and new ones can be considered as two different kinds of fish. Third, grow
them gradually into the church life rather than bring into. Get them connected
to student first, then brothers house, then saints home, then church visiting trip,
then regular church life.
May the Lord gain these promising new ones and church kids to be the pillars in the Body.
